What to Do When You Have a Tooth Abscess

An abscessed tooth is incredibly painful. In addition to this, the infection often leaves a foul odour. An abscess develops when bacteria create a pocket of pus in the tip of the tooth’s root. This pocket may cause a pimple on the gums, a bulge in the gum line, or a recurrent red bump.

Some things you can consider when experiencing a tooth abscess. For emergency dental treatment, contact your local dentist.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment involves cleaning out the abscess and dead tissue from the tooth’s root and then filling and sealing it.

Root canal therapy can be performed by your regular dentist.

Dental Debridement

The dentist may also debride and irrigate or wash the area of infection with saline. Debridement is the removal of dead or necrotic tissue that will never heal. A full mouth debridement generally is an easy treatment that doesn’t cause too much pain.

While debridement may seem like a quick fix, it does have its risks. In addition to the potential for infection, it can cause pain, bleeding gums, swelling, and sensitivity to hot and cold.

Oral Antibiotics

Antibiotics can treat the pain temporarily and alleviate discomfort. However, antibiotics will not penetrate the abscess and is therefore not a permanent solution to treat the root of the problem.

An abscess, when left untreated, may become infected and spread to surrounding organs and even the brain, so seeking medical treatment from your dentist is essential.

Seeking Medical Help

While home remedies and over-the-counter pain relievers can help you manage the discomfort of a tooth abscess, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention.

An abscess is also likely to recur unless the underlying cause is addressed. If you suspect that you have an abscess, schedule an appointment with a professional at Rockingham Dental Centre to determine the extent of the infection and the best course of treatment.
